The Sounds of Half a Century

This is the story of a Stadium. A massive sports arena, built in the borough of the Bronx, in the City of New York, out of 2200 tons of concrete and steelon 11.6 acres of land. Built in 1923, and thanks to the blessings of immortal names performing immortal deeds, the Stadium—Yankee Stadium—became the most famous sports arena in America.

The majesty of the structure overwhelms. As the first triple-decked stadium in the country, it represented a great architectural achievement. The graceful design of the facade, encircling the grandstand, became a backdrop to hundreds of memorable moments—as the migthty Yankees won 27 pennants in their first 42 years of occupancy, employing the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle.

The Stadium, although dominated by the great Yankee teams, was also the home of championship boxing, New York Giant football, the historic Mass for Peace by Pope Paul VI, and many others events which sent over eighty million people through the turnstiles in a half century.

Now as Yankee Stadium Prepares for a massive remodeling program which will make it one of the most modern and comfortable parks in the country, we relive here on this recoring some of those wondrous moments of the past which turned the Stadium into a veritable house of worship for so many. It is fitting that Mel Allen, the long time Voice of the Yankees is our host, as we borrow the standout minutes of glory which rose from 50 years of enjoyment in the hearts of sports fans. From Babe Ruth to Bobby Murcer—It's all here to preserve with the baseball memorabilia that spanned generations.
