She called the lump in Her breast ‘a black pearl’, She called her Mother to nurse Her in the darkest hours, She called memories of the three men She loved at different times of Her life to draw the parallels between seemingly similar situations of betrayal. Who is going to betray Her, who is going to stay... ?
She struggles with the meaning of life trying to find it through themes of motherhood, friendship, betrayal, displacement, illness, pain, grief and loss.
She travelled to Andalucia, London, The Isle of Man, where She met colourful characters believing that the unknown can reverse the fragmentation and change reality, believing that all the little broken selves can once again bring the broken pieces into a cohesive mosaic.

The Stuff of Literature
July 30, 2013
By Caleb Pirtle, Author, Film-maker
"I was stunned when I read Branka Cubrilo's "The Mosaic of the Broken Soul." I had read her short stories and was quite impressed with her literary talents. However, I thought that Mosaic was probably a woman's book, which would not interest me in the least. I was wrong. The novel is an ode to humanity and those problems both large and small that do indeed become the mosaic of our lives. I felt as though I was reading about someone I truly cared about, and maybe it was because I really did care about a woman facing the toughest tests that can ever confront anyone: the lump in her breast, the black pearl that may take her life, the lost loves she has experienced, the hope that springs eternal, the determination to fight to the end no matter what the end may be. No one captures the passion, the spirit, and the resilience of the human soul like Branka Cubrilo. Some novelists write prose. Branka writes literature. Her story sings. It makes you cry. It makes you worry. You understand what fear is all about when it grips your heart during the darkest of hours. It gives you hope even when hope seems like an impossible place to find. With "The Mosaic of the Broken Soul," Branka Cubrilo has established herself as one of the most important writers of her generation, a generation that is indeed fortunate to have her."
"Branka's writing is elegant and penetrative."

"Exquisitely well-crafted, The Mosaic Of The Broken Soul is a highly-rewarding literary jewel. Chronicling one brave soul’s harrowing journey on the road to self-discovery, author Branka Cubrilo’s moving offering is equally heart-rending and uplifting. Touching on such delicate themes as motherhood, friendship, grief, loss, and surviving breast cancer, The Mosaic Of The Broken Soul takes the reader on an emotional, passion-filled roller coaster ride through the unfettered depths of the human soul—reassuring us all that even the darkest and longest of tunnels still has light at the end.
An insightful, brutally honest slice of unbridled humanity. Highly recommended."

Review by Jennifer Perry: Forget what you know, what you’ve read, any other story of or by a woman dealing with cancer, recovery, pain, loss, betrayal and hurt. Branka Cubrilo skips the traditional, chronological one or two dimensional memoir, replacing it with a mosaic of precious images weaving a tapestry of the narrator’s life and soul.
The Mosaic Of The Broken Soul is a breathtakingly beautiful work, nuanced and compelling, engaging with layers of discovery, self-awareness, introspection, pain and healing. It is how we come to terms with our selves, our history, desire for wholeness and peace. It is beautiful. - See more→

After reading The Mosaic of the Broken Soul, I feel liberated from many a vague notion in my attempts to understand and label complex issues of life, and I have a clearer and more focused vision of my future priorities and where my heart should be! It is a therapeutic journey not only for its heroine, but for the reader him/herself as well - the best gift one can receive in the never-ending process of growth, spirituality and fulfillment! Thank you so much, Branka, for many a wisdom derived and delivered in your descriptions and conclusions, one of my favorites being: It is not time that heals our broken heart, it is finally seeing the truth about the one who broke it that does it (I hope I remember it correctly!)
The compassion with which Branka approaches life and the vulnerable and the unprotected ones is so overwhelming and touching - to the point of physical pain which I felt when reading about them... and many tears have flown down my cheeks as I did! With people like her around, this world is a much more inspiring place to be in than we often give it credit! Thank you, Branka, ever so much for this wonderful and unforgettable journey!

A Literary Gem
As I was reading the first edition of Branka Cubrilo's book a year ago my heart went out to all those women who had been through the harrowing experience of fighting breast cancer, all those abandoned by their husbands, and to all mothers, especially single mothers. `The Mosaic of the Broken Soul' is a tale of one such woman whose husband left her when she needed him most. It is a story of shattered dreams, pain and fear, and of courage, friendship, love and ultimately forgiveness, describing the painstaking journey from brokenness to wholeness.
I love this book and will cherish it, return to it for inspiration and for the sheer pleasure of savouring again Branka's beautifully crafted lyrical prose, which draws one gently yet powerfully into her world of deep reflection and intense emotions , sprinkled with a touch of humour for good measure. This engrossing novel, peopled with many colourful characters, is not only deeply moving but entertaining as well. It is indeed a literary gem.
