On June 6,1976 in Phoenix Arizona, the Boston Celtics won their 13th NBA Championship, emblematic of world supremacy in professional basketball.
...But sometimes winning isn't everything!
Just ask any Phoenix fan who followed the Suns during their incredible Cinderella season.
This was the year when the Phoenix Suns roared from the back of the pack in the Pacific Division to win a spot in the NBA playoffs.
Underdogs all the way, they swept past Seattle in six games, and went on to defeat the defending World Champion Golden State Warriors in seven thrilling contests, before finally succumbing to the powerhouse Celtics in six games. In the course of that final championship series, however, the Suns overcame a 22-point deficit, and in the process created perhaps the most exciting and memorable game in NBA playoff history the unbelievable triple-overtime fifth game won by Boston 128-126. One of the most historic sports events of all time, the contest left everyone players, coaches, fans, and millions of radio listeners and television viewers in a state of emotional and physical exhaustion.
Phoenix was paced by two rookies named Adams and Sobers, two first-year Suns named Westphal and Heard, and second-year Sun named Perry.
This young quintet was put together by General Manager Jerry Colangelo, and molded into an inspired force by Coach John MacLeod. But behind the scenes, another key to the Phoenix success was the attitude of the Suns' owners, true sportspeople who fro the beginning cared much more about rewarding the fantastic Phoenix fans with an exciting, winning ball team than they did about their financial statement.
The "Sunderella Suns" captured the hearts of basketball fans across the nation and turned a million Phoenix fans into 20th century "Suns worshippers". This album is the story of The Rising Suns, from their very beginning to the thrilling climax of the '76 playoffs.
Listen, and relive these exciting highlights and interviews including live-action reporting from THAT FIFTH GAME cited by many as "the greatest basketball game ever played"; or in the words of Paul Silas, star Celtics forward and former Phoenix Sun, "In a game like that, it's a shame someone had to win".
