Deputies Blaise Jeremiah (BJ) DeLarue and Tom Ivey, combat Marines, discover a bloody scene in the cabin of Charles Duffman, a reclusive veteran with severe PTSD—the son of a local hooker, Charles grew up hard in Texas, where he never fit in but could never leave.

Using their Native American heritage, the deputies identify the deceased by tattoos and realize Charles is missing. Blaise saw slaughter, Tom saw signs. Blaise is unaware he's Tom’s fraternal twin.  Tom grew up with their mother, Estanatlehi, a supernatural Earth dimension Protector. Tom is an elemental shapeshifter whose alter ego, Tóbájíshchíní, has been waiting for his brother to ascend to his alter ego, Nayenezgani.
