Annamaria Monte lives a calm, stable life with her fellow professor and long-term partner, Vilas Visconti. Their relationship is one bound by love, noble origin and social status. Annamaria, being complacent with following her set path, is thrown into despair, passion and turmoil upon meeting her new, mysterious student, the sculptor Garcia de Veres. Each of the protagonists in this story share their very complex and varied life story, slowly unravelling that they are all inextricably linked, even before they ever met.
What impact could a small lie conceived in a Spanish orphanage have on the protagonists several decades later? Like a wrecking ball, it crushes them to dust, yet binds them forever. Seemingly little lies unravel into big lies of catastrophic consequences.
These threads are all connected, woven and shared by the novel’s narrator, the psychologist, Miranda Mavis.
