This is a fictional story about a real-life historical character, Nate Champion, a legendary and almost mythical figure in the Johnson County War of 1892.  Champion’s bravery in standing off a small army of hired gunman is well known and documented.  “Blue Horse Mesa” explores the possibility of a seldom-heard story about Champion and a woman, known here as Lou Ellen.
