Lira, a Stonelander, and prisoner of the Imperials, watches her village get invaded and burned to the ground. She escapes to join the Scarlet Eagles, freedom fighters for the Stonelands, who use medallions, physical fragments of their lost gods, to facilitate their guerilla warfare. Lira soon becomes a warrior, intent on avenging her father’s murder, but at a young age she is forced to lead her people when her mentor and the Scarlet Eagle commander is slain, leaving her to continue to fight for their freedom.

Meanwhile, Edwyn, the disgraced heir to Victorum, is tasked by Emperor Cornelius, his father, to hunt down and kill his cousin, Tomas, the last surviving member of the previous Regime. Aros, Edwyn’s childhood friend and a past lover, serves as a captain under Edwyn’s command in the campaign. In secret, he has been ordered by Cornelius to assassinate Edwyn once the mission is completed.  

Tomas, with his memory wiped, living under the identity of Valion, has been an outcast in the Kingdom of Akalia. When the Bronze Trials surface to determine who will be the next member of the Akalian Royal guard, he seizes his chance for acceptance.
