A Dinner in Shanghai

Written with what the New York Times has called, “Mr. Bull’s spirited, sensuous, hotblooded evocation of a rich and eventful historical world,” Bartle Bull’s A Dinner in Shanghai is a powerful thriller exposing the explosive origins of the Sino-Soviet alliance through a lens of high-stakes intrigue and sweeping romance.

Set in 1923, A Dinner in Shanghai is a historical novel that carries immense modern relevance. The book mirrors today's greatest geopolitical challenge: a coordinated, powerful alliance between Russia and China attempting to dominate the global future.

The plot unfolds at the true dawn of this partnership. Exactly one century ago, Joseph Stalin sent Soviet agents into China to back the fledgling Chinese Communist Party in its campaign to seize control of the nation.

Amidst this high-stakes backdrop, hero Alexander Karlov returns from the first two Shanghai novels. He must directly confront these dangerous Soviet operatives and their new alliance, all while navigating a complex romance with the daughter of an American missionary.

As history repeats itself, this compelling background has become extraordinarily timely. Our relationship with China grows more critical with every passing day.
